June - July '22 Project Status Update: Design Plans Submitted!
What level of effort does it take to develop a comprehensively designed plan to provide clean water to 1000+ people in rural Peru? Over the past two months, it’s taken a specialized volunteer team meeting weekly and our own internal members working around the clock, but now, Vera Aqua Vera Vita is finally nearing the finish line on the engineering and design! The Planning and Engineering team has just passed a significant milestone with the recent submittal of a draft of 100% complete construction plans to provide clean water to the barren, desert community of Las Mercedes KM11 (with a population of approximately 1,025).
The team submitted a preliminary draft of the Waterline Plans and Profile (a geotechnically accurate visualization of the waterline placement) on June 10, 2022. Since then, they’ve been working tirelessly to complete the complete set of Computer Aided Design (CAD) construction plans, including Structural Plans, Storage Tank and Water Intake Site Plans, as well as the actual Treatment and Distribution Design.
Finally, after diligent effort, Vera Aqua Vera Vita was able to submit a draft of the 100% complete set of construction plans in PDF and CAD file formats for all aspects of the project, as well as a Comprehensive Design Calculations Package – this submission to the Piura Regional Government (GRP) initiates the final steps to complete before be ready to commence construction. Over the next few weeks, the GRP and our team will work to completely translate the plans and design calculations from English into Spanish while also preparing a comprehensive construction cost estimate. Once the cost estimate is complete, simultaneous efforts will begin to secure any additional funding needed to cover the construction capital costs and hire a local in-country contractor to construct the proposed water system.
This submission is a huge milestone for VAVV’s team, and the GRP was so excited to receive the plans that they have already asked to meet with our team to ensure proper execution of the next steps.
In the upcoming weeks, we’ll work to officially securing water use rights and complete final stages of the project planning and engineering process for Las Mercedes KM11 as described above. Additonally, more and more attention will be turned back towards completing the same steps for the Cerro de Leones clean water system.
There’s still a lot to do before Las Mercedes KM11 has clean water, but our entire organization is thrilled that we’re staying on track to provide each one of its 1,025 residents with clean, accessible water before the end of 2022 and empower the entire community to go from simply surviving to ultimately thriving!
