September 2021 Project Status: Narrowing Down Water Source & Infrastructure Location
So much has happened for our communities overseas in Peru the past few months. With the engineering team working non-stop to get everything in order to break ground on construction in early 2022, the two Piura projects have seen a lot of progress since our last update.
Back in August, you may remember we had contracted Remicio Y Gutierrez Hydrogeologic to help us complete the geophysical assessment for Cerro de Leones - an assessment that would help our engineering team determine whether groundwater is a viable source of water for the solution VAVV plans to construct. On Sept. 6, the geophysical assessment was completed and the resulting research ruled out groundwater as an option. This means that a nearby river will be the source water.
The Cerro de Leones project has now only two weeks or so behind the Las Mercedes KM11’s project progress. VAVV is now working on a detailed evaluation of the viable surface water - a river that runs a mile outside of Cerro de Leones.
Las Mercedes KM11, however, has had some progress of its own. As groundwater was already ruled out as an option for this community from the beginning, theengineering team has been working to obtain more information on the source water which is a nearby irrigation canal.
Gabriel Panta, our main set of technical eyes and ears on the ground, has acquired the exact location, dimensions and depth of La Mercedes KM11’s nearest canal, as well as feedback on the proposed locations for the water treatment facility and distribution buildings. The engineering team has used this specific information to determine some of the more practical aspects of construction, such as feasible means of water extraction and the alignment for the pipeline from the canal to the treatment and distribution building
On Sept. 13, a topographical assessment - an assessment of the surface of the land, especially elevation and/or depth - was started by a local consultant, Luis Solis, hired by VAVV, with results expected before the end of the month. These results will help VAVV confidently and accurately design the facilities and infrastruture to be constructed.
The planning and engineering team is still meeting every week to continue to advance in the management aspects of the engineering stage of helping these two communities. They have completed the compilation of a detailed shortlist of the options for the water treatment technologies that are viable for each community, which will very soon be presented to the communities for input and selection of the best options.
We hope the upcoming weeks hold even more progress and development!
